She {hearts} Cool Pencil Cases

We are just about to leave for our cross country, summer vacation to California!

We’re super excited (me, because I’m going to BlogHer, The Dudes because they’re going to grandma’s while I’m at BlogHer and then to Disneyland) and getting crazy with all of the last minute preparations.

One of which is buying school supplies.

I know, total I’m-going-on-vacation buzz kill.

But, sadly, it must be done because when we return we will have a very small window of time to get ready to head back to school.

And, no one wants to wait until the last minute to school shop.

Everyone knows that all of the 4o cent composition books will be gone and we’ll be left with the $1.75 ones that no first grader needs.

So, we braved Wal-Mart yesterday and did our worst on the glue sticks (seriously 8, glue sticks?!) and crayons.

But, one thing I always like to do for The Dudes is to get them a few special back-to-school items.

Cool stuff that didn’t come from Wal-Mart so they can have something unique that everyone else in the calss doesn’t have.

Like a Cool Pencil Case!, sellers of super cool pencil cases and a variety of other school related supplies, sent us this one to send #1 back to school in style.

Now, if we can just do something about his school clothes!

{heart} It has a large selection of specialty school supplies.  They offer all sorts of school treats for kids and, as a former teacher, I’d love a gift card from the shop to buy things to reward my students.  Hello Kitty, Shaun the Sheep, and tons of other designs are available.  We love monkeys.  And the Converse ones are cute too!

She {hearts} The FlashMaster

IMG_8962copyAs a home school mom I am always looking to other moms with advice and ideas to help engage my children more and more into their schooling. My oldest son Caleb will be in 1st grade this year and my middle son Taite will be entering Kindergarten. After going through one year of teaching math to a young child, I realize the importance of flash cards and having to go over things multiple times in order to help them remember and gain an understanding.

When I think back on my childhood days and the early math years, I remember memorizing my multiplication tables. It really is something that is important to do. When you think of 5×5, you automatically know what it equals. Not because you count it up in your head unusually fast, but because its memorized.

I was so excited to hear about the FlashMaster. A friend of mine introduced me to it and I am so glad.

I can honestly say my son has loved using this. He picks it up ON HIS OWN at random, IN THE SUMMER of all times :) – and gets so excited when he scores a 100% or gets a harder math problem correct.

IMG_8965copySo if your kids are tired of the flash cards… and you are on the road a lot, or your kids just enjoy something hand held, the FlashMaster is it! With countless great reviews from other home schooling moms, this is something well worth checking into. It starts with early math such as addition and subtraction of single numbers, as well as division, multiplication and up.

She {hearts} Barefoot Books

New Logo Image
IMG_9422About a week ago we finished our 1st official year of home schooling our boys. Caleb our oldest completed kindergarten while our middle son who is 4 completed pre-K work. We could not be more proud of them.

With summer approaching however we have to set into place a plan. We strongly believe that schooling while at times we need breaks from, it is also very important to keep a routine in play year round. To some degree :) – We of course will take our vacations and down time… but during the summer I intend on really encouraging my children to read, especially my oldest who can now read on his own.

Barefoot Books
is an incredible online library that has such a beautiful variety of great reading resources for children. If you are a book lover prepare yourself for this site :) – because it is packed full. I found myself browsing through all the great book titles and fun activities it had to offer.

The site even has POD CAST that your children can listen to along with their favorite books.

moonWe got a variety of books from this shop and love them. Each a great addition to our library.
