She {hearts} Blue Orange Games

I have never really been a huge fan of board games.

I know, I know, this admission probably makes me sound like the worst mother ever.

But, whatever.

I didn’t like them when I was younger. And I don’t like them now.

The kids cheat and fight. Dumb Dad cheats and trash talks. It’s hard to find something that the four year old AND the ten year old can enjoy. And they take FOREVER to end. Unless I cheat too. And,while I’m not above that, I find it an exercise in excess creativity I don’t really have.

Maybe it’s just the type of board games we’ve been playing?!

Recently Blue Orange Games sent us Spot it.

It is a symbol matching game that for some reason my kids, my husband, and I all love to play!

You can’t cheat. There’s nothing to fight over. And it’s appropriate for every member of our family, from the 4 year old on up (although, technically, the game is geared towards kids 7 & up, he is a pretty savvy 4 and has had no problem having a blast with us and this game).

It’s easy to play, doesn’t require a lot of set up, doesn’t take FOREVER to finish, so it’s no wonder that we love, love, love it.

It’s even perfect for road trip fun in the back seat because all you need is the cards and, um, eyes!

I went online to check out some of Blue Orange’s other gaming options and honestly, they make so many perfect titles for my Dudes.  So many of their games are active, noisy, and filled with the kind of fun my boys were made for!

She {hearts} Swapsies™

IMG_1939Not to long ago I was fortunate enough to get an ipad2 :) – it was a total surprise and I was super excited. It was something I have wanted for a while and looked forward to one day using one for my photography business as well as personal use of course. Little did I know my boys would quickly grow to love it probably even more than me!

The list of APPS available are endless it seems…

I was recently introduced to two APPS. One of those being Swapsies and the other one being TallyTots. They are both by Spinlight Studio Apps.

They are cute games, both suited for younger children. Although my older two who are 5 and 7, have really enjoyed Swapsies. I think the idea of putting people together in different costumes is just fun for them. They do however have a thing for costumes ;-) – as their closet is full of them.

TallyTots is a great APP for teaching numbers… I look forward to using it once Owen is 3 and we begin to introduce him to his numbers more.

Here is a quick video on Swapsies – gives you an idea as to how it works.

She {hearts} DIY Birthday Bowling Game

I have been preparing for my sons Angry Birds Party tomorrow. He is turning 4. I have had so much fun scouring Pinterest  for great ideas. I even have my own Party Ideas board. I came across an adorable Angry Birds Bowling game.

Basically you take a 10 different shades of paint and depending on how thick your paint is you may need to add a tiny bit of water. You add the paint to 10, 2 liter bottles. I actually used 5 different colors and repeated the colors. I wanted to match my party theme.

Once you put the paint in the 2 liter bottles you shake it around to completely cover the inside. Then you will drain out the excess and leave the tops off so the paint will dry.

I also made some angry bird balls to go with it but really you could use any type of ball.

{heart} It

I had so much fun doing this and I will do it again. The awesome thing about this is you can reuse 2 liter bottles and always do new ones to match your color scheme. It is so cheap, easy to do, and the kids will love it.

She {hearts} Peaceable Kingdom

My 4 year old son is slightly competitive. I’m not so sure where he got it from, but I think it is just a common milestone of a child his age. So when it comes to playing games, it can get a little dramatic around here. That’s why I am happy to have found a company called Peaceable Kingdom.

We got the chance to review the game “Stone Soup” and couldn’t be happier. It is easy enough for our entire family to play together, it is customizable for different ages and ability levels, and it isn’t a “winning” game, but a “cooperative” matching game.

The game is simple, but really fun! It works on skills such as memory, social development, helping others, and cooperation. All things that my son is either already pretty good and or could use a little help in. The game comes with 24 soup ingredient cards, 1 magic stone card, 10 fire out cards, the game board, and the story of Stone Soup. I remember reading it as a child, so I was really happy to share it with my kids as well.

My kids worked together to match all the ingredients up (you can even customize it to be a vegetarian soup as well!), and when one child couldn’t remember, they helped each other out. When you make a match, you put the ingredients in the kettle and since it isn’t a competitive game, but a cooperative game, they knew they could work together to make the soup. For the first few times we played, I did not include the Fire Out and Magic Stone cards (when you get 10 “Fire Out’s” then the game is over). I wanted to keep it simple enough for them to get the hang of and not get discouraged. If the kids are in a cranky mood or getting on each others nerves, I often pull out this game and it seems to calm them down and get them back to working together, instead of working against each other.

The graphics on the game are fun and colorful and the quality of the game is amazing. The game board is thick and sturdy, as well as the game pieces. And at only $14.99 this is a steal for the quality and the learning experience!

From the Peaceable Kingdom Website:

Peaceable Kingdom’s mission is to make good, do good, and be good. Which means:

She {hearts} Teach Me

There has been tons of controversy over the use of a smart phone by babies and toddlers over the years. But personally, I think that we are obligated as parents to change with the times and with the vast addition of technology showing up in the classrooms across the world, why not give your kids a head start with some cool, techy educational tools that TEACH them as they play.

I was browsing through the Top 25 Apps on my iPhone tonight, trying to find something I could quickly upload to entertain my 2 year old while we were waiting at a restaurant for our dinner. I saw Teach Me, an educational set of App’s geared toward the learning abilities of toddlers and kindergarteners. Both App’s allow the parent to set up profiles for up to four children, along with their picture, so the child can easily identify which game is their own. The added bonus? They were only 99 cents a piece!

My 4 year old son works solely on the Kindergarten Teach Me App, where he is learning addition and subtraction and well as sight words. I have not worked with him yet on these area’s so I was curious how he would approach such a learning tool. He loves it! When he reaches a pre-determined goal, he receives a coin. Add up the coins, and he can purchase a variety of objects to fill up different scenes (like an aquarium, a farm, a playground, etc.) He has a goal in mind, so he loves to complete the tasks in order to achieve it.

My 2 year old daughter uses the Toddler Teach Me App, where she learns about shapes, colors, letters, and numbers. She too has a pre-determined goal (that I set for her), and with each accomplishment, she too gets to choose a “sticker”, and place it on a scene as well. I do love how they make the goals and accomplishments simpler and easier for a younger child to understand on the Toddler version.

Both versions allow the parent to review the questions, disable any questions or topics that might be too hard for the child, or set it up to work on just one task (like a JUST addition or JUST spelling for example). The parent can look at each and every word or problem the child does, to see what areas may need more work and what areas they are excelling in. You can also set up a passcode, so the children cannot change any settings on their own.

For only 99 cents an app, you can’t go wrong with Teach Me Toddler, Kindergarten, and First Grade.

Teach Me App’s are available in the iTunes store for download on your iPhone or iPod Touch for only 99 cents a piece!

She {hearts} Briarpatch

Photobucket
Photobucket

Goodnight Moon is a book that most moms have memorized for life. Our copy is getting worn out from so many readings with my almost 2-year-old. Using these familiar pictures Briarpatch has developed their Goodnight Moon Game. With multiple ways to play even their instructions are pretty open-ended.  We play with as many or as little “rules” as we like and all have fun doing so.

Jubilee (20 months) is able to find and match pictures already. In addition, since there are so many ways to play- this game will not only be able to grow with my children but also is one we won’t tire of quickly.
Photobucket
Briarpatch has many enjoyable games to encourage essential skills for our young ones. This pleases them as much as mama, just look at that proud face!

Briarpatch has a wonderful selection of brand games for your family. Besides Goodnight Moon, they have I Spy, Fancy Nancy, Thomas & Friends, and more.
