I try to be very careful about what I put in my body.  Sometimes, I am not so careful about what I use on the surface of my skin.  I started doing my research on foundations and make-up that are fairly popular.  I could not believe all the stuff that they put in the products.  That is when my search for a “healthy” foundation began.  I found Root through a friend who raved about the mineral foundation.  I did my research and loved every detail about the product… including the price!

root kitRoot is a new company that offers mineral make-up that is actually good for our skin.  There are absolutely NO fillers and chemicals- just four simple ingredients!  I was so happy to try Root’s pearl mineral foundation, bronzer, and setting silk.  I was blown away by the texture of the minerals.  They were so fine and literally glided on my face.  The setting silk felt just like… silk!

I tried three different foundations (shade 1, 3, and 6) and landed on the formula 3 foundation along with the light bronzer.  I wore the product every day for a week and felt like it held up all day long, too.  There were a couple of days that I threw on a quick layer of the setting silk just to make me feel better, but honestly, I probably didn’t need it.  I am just so used to having to re-apply my powder, that it was habit for me to do so.  I do want to add that I have quite a bit of redness and scarring from acne on my chin and cheeks, so for a powder foundation to conceal all that is pretty good (these are raw images- no editing was done)!

I am a coffee lover.  I don’t like to add anything to my brew- just yummy, black coffee.  Lately, I have been craving iced coffees.  I have a difficult time making iced coffee at home that is strong enough for me, yet not bitter, so I began searching for the perfect brew for my iced coffees.  This is where Rudabegga’s Artisian Coffee Concentrate comes and saves the day!  I was so excited to find a concentrate that was delicious without adding in a ton of calories, carbs, and artificial sweeteners.

She {hearts} Mini Workouts

We ALL know we need to make fitness a priority, but man, some days finding making the time seems impossible. If you’re caring for little ones it’s just that much harder. I have found that most of us have an “all or nothing” approach to fitness.  That means, if you can’t make it to the gym or do a full workout at home, you skip your workouts entirely for that day. Sound familiar? It’s okay, I’ve been there too. But doing that can easily turn into a habit and you find yourself frustrated and back at square one.

What you should do, is try to get in at least a few mini workouts in.  Something is truly better than nothing. 

“What are these “mini workouts?”, you ask?

Short bursts of physical activity. 

I do what I call my “mommy workouts.”  Even if I know I’m going to the gym that day, I’ll do these mini workouts to make sure I don’t miss out, just in case life throws me a curve ball later in the day. Also, they’re fun and really boost my mood!

It all adds up.

The surgeon general recommends 30 minutes of exercise per day, 5 days a week. And it doesn’t have to be 30 consecutive minutes a day. So, these can get you where you need to be.

Some of my favorite places to get inspiration for these workouts are on YouTube. I’ll watch them and write down something I wanna try, maybe practice it with the video, and then do it on my own. I might have music playing while I’m cleaning house or doing laundry, and I’ll literally just stop and workout. Then get back to my task.

I hope you’ll start moving more. The benefits of physical activity are numerous, and we all know it.

She {hearts} Hibiscus Tea Concentrate

I started making hibiscus tea concentrate to aid in the healing of my adrenals. It’s rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants plus wonderfully refreshing.  (please note, I’ve read some not-so-nice things about this tea and pregnancy, so please check with your doctor if you are pregnant before drinking.)

I enjoy very bold flavors so the concentrated form allows me to make a good strong glass while making others in our home a more diluted versio


You’ll need:
1. Organic hibiscus tea flowers. My local grocery store carries them in bulk, but as much as I’m making, Amazon has the better price so I’ll be switching soon.

2.Organic raw sugar

3. (optional) Juice of half a lime, fresh ginger, organic orange peel, organic lemon peel, and/or other fruit teas like raspberry, blueberry, etc…

Boil 2 cups of filtered water. Remove from heat. Add one cup of hibiscus leaves plus any of the optional items. (The lime juice and ginger are a must-have for me!)

Cover and let the tea steep for 30 minutes (which simply means let it sit there.)

Filter the concentrate into a bowl and add sugar (I use about 3/4 cup. I don’t like really sweet drinks.) Dissolve the sugar then pour the concentrate into a container and refrigerate.

To drink: use one cup of concentrate to one cup of filtered water. Remember, I like mine strong, so if it’s overwhelming to your taste buds, add more water until it’s pleasant to your tastebuds!

She {hearts} Avocado & Black Bean Salad

My family loves Mexican cuisine.  I think we could eat it every day of the week.  We love the lime, cilantro, and chili flavors all married together in one simple dish.  Since we eat it quite often, I try to switch up my recipes so it doesn’t feel like we are eating the same foods all the time.  I love avocados (it just might be the way to my heart… avocados!), so when I found this recipe I was stoked!  It is full of good fats, proteins, and is “clean” eating for those who are health conscious, not to mention it is easy and cheap!

avocado & black bean salad
  • 1 can organic Black Beans, drained and rinsed
  • 2 ripe Avocados, diced
  • 1 Red Bell Pepper, finely diced
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Lime Juice
  • Salt & Pepper
  1. Mix the first 3 ingredients together.
  2. Combine olive oil, lime juice, salt and pepper over the salad until the taste suits your fancy.
  3. Stir, chill, and enjoy!

I hope you enjoy this quick, easy, and cheap recipe!  I love that I can serve this independently, alongside another dish, or wrapped in a warm tortilla with fajitas and tacos.  It is super tasty and totally versatile!

She (still) {hearts} nourish organics

 

Just about a year ago, I reviewed Nourish Organics here on She {hearts} It and I love this company so much that I’m back at it again.  Nourish Organics is an organic skincare company owned and operated by sweet Olivia, who I’ve had the pleasure of knowing for a few years now. Hannah’s Oak began with a product to sell- cute wool dryer balls, which Paula sent to me for review. However since then Paula felt like she was being called to use Hannah’s Oak mainly to help mothers and families rather than sell a product. Hannah’s Oak is an awesome site whose heart of  their mission is to particularly help those “brokenhearted by pregnancy complications, children in intensive care units; & child loss through our projects & support.” Paula recently began Project Bella’s Bows to provide adorable bows for babies in her local NICU as well as for bereavement photos shoots.

I have been witness to the loss of a child in labor, miscarriages, unable to conceive, having a child in the NICU and each trial brings about it’s own unique set of hardships. I think it’s wonderful that someone is doing something for these mothers, using her time and talents in service of others.
