She {hearts} Root

header

I try to be very careful about what I put in my body.  Sometimes, I am not so careful about what I use on the surface of my skin.  I started doing my research on foundations and make-up that are fairly popular.  I could not believe all the stuff that they put in the products.  That is when my search for a “healthy” foundation began.  I found Root through a friend who raved about the mineral foundation.  I did my research and loved every detail about the product… including the price!

root kitRoot is a new company that offers mineral make-up that is actually good for our skin.  There are absolutely NO fillers and chemicals- just four simple ingredients!  I was so happy to try Root’s pearl mineral foundation, bronzer, and setting silk.  I was blown away by the texture of the minerals.  They were so fine and literally glided on my face.  The setting silk felt just like… silk!

I tried three different foundations (shade 1, 3, and 6) and landed on the formula 3 foundation along with the light bronzer.  I wore the product every day for a week and felt like it held up all day long, too.  There were a couple of days that I threw on a quick layer of the setting silk just to make me feel better, but honestly, I probably didn’t need it.  I am just so used to having to re-apply my powder, that it was habit for me to do so.  I do want to add that I have quite a bit of redness and scarring from acne on my chin and cheeks, so for a powder foundation to conceal all that is pretty good (these are raw images- no editing was done)!

I am so happy to share such a great product with our readers.  I feel like the product, coupled with the amazing price, is hard to beat!

She {hearts} Splendies

logoOne thing that I normally spend money on is high quality underwear. You wear them all day long so you want to be comfortable. I was sent three pairs of organic undies to try out. They were all silky smooth and really adorable! I was surprised the shipping was so quick. I was excited to open up the package and see which ones I received. All three pairs did fit me. My favorites were both of the polka dots ones. Very cute.

She {hearts} brine

We’ve recently started brining our pork, chicken, and turkey. It adds a whole new level of juicy goodness to these easy-to-dry out meats!

Here’s a great article if you’d like to understand why brining works.

Brine

Pendergrass Brine

This will be enough to brine a turkey. Cut the recipe in half for smaller batches of meat.

A gallon and a half water
4 lemons
4 limes
2 oranges
2 onions
4 bay leaves
Tablespoon black peppercorns
Tablespoon thyme
2 cups kosher salt
1/2 cup brown sugar

Bring to a boil, then cool to room temperature. Put brine and meat in a container large enough so that the meat is covered. If needed, add a bit more water. Cover and refrigerate at least 24 hours. Drain brine. Rinse. Pat meat dry. Then cook and enjoy!

she {hearts} cuban cold bean salad

One of the most refreshing (and protein rich!) summer salads I make is this Cuban Cold Bean Salad. It’s easy! The hardest part comes in chopping all the veggies, but just turn up your radio and jam out while you do.

Cuban Bean Salad

Cuban Cold Bean Salad

3 cans of beans rinsed and drained (we always use black beans, then we vary on the others–dark and/or light kidney beans, red beans, chickpeas) The salad pictured  has black, dark kidney and red beans)

1 or 2 Peppers (green, yellow, red)

1 or 2 hot peppers (chile, jalapeno, banana)

2 avocados

1 good sized purple onion

Half a bunch of cilantro, leaves picked off

3-4 Roma tomatoes

1 can corn, drained (I ran out of corn so this batch is without)

Juice of one lime (or a few tablespoons lime juice)

Juice of one orange (or a few tablespoons orange juice)

4 cloves garlic, minced

1/4 cup olive oil

1 tablespoon cumin

1/4 teaspoon to a teaspoon cayenne (depending on how hot you like it!)

Salt and pepper to taste

Chop everything, add juices and seasonings, mix and enjoy!!

she {hearts} the best sweet tea ever

It may sound silly, but after thirty years of making sweet tea I think I’ve finally found the secret. I’m even willing to share!

Untitled

Fill a two-quart sauce pan almost full of filtered water.

Untitled

Bring to a rolling boil.

Remove from heat and add 10 tagless black tea bags or one iced tea sized bag.

Untitled

Untitled

Cover and let tea steep for 20 minutes.

Remove tea bags and add sugar.  (We use 3/4 cup raw sugar. We don’t like really sweet iced tea.

If you like it sweet, add 1 1/2 to 2 cups of sugar to your warm tea concentrate.)

Untitled

Stir to dissolve sugar. Let tea rest (covered) until close to room temperature then add it in a clean gallon container (we use old milk and OJ jugs)

Fill the container with the tea concentrate and filtered water. Shake. Enjoy!!

She {hearts} Hibiscus Tea Concentrate

I started making hibiscus tea concentrate to aid in the healing of my adrenals. It’s rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants plus wonderfully refreshing.  (please note, I’ve read some not-so-nice things about this tea and pregnancy, so please check with your doctor if you are pregnant before drinking.)

Hibiscus Tea Refresher Concentrate

I enjoy very bold flavors so the concentrated form allows me to make a good strong glass while making others in our home a more diluted versio

You’ll need:
1. Organic hibiscus tea flowers. My local grocery store carries them in bulk, but as much as I’m making, Amazon has the better price so I’ll be switching soon.

2.Organic raw sugar

3. (optional) Juice of half a lime, fresh ginger, organic orange peel, organic lemon peel, and/or other fruit teas like raspberry, blueberry, etc…

Boil 2 cups of filtered water. Remove from heat. Add one cup of hibiscus leaves plus any of the optional items. (The lime juice and ginger are a must-have for me!)

Cover and let the tea steep for 30 minutes (which simply means let it sit there.)

Filter the concentrate into a bowl and add sugar (I use about 3/4 cup. I don’t like really sweet drinks.) Dissolve the sugar then pour the concentrate into a container and refrigerate.

Hibiscus Tea Refresher Concentrate

To drink: use one cup of concentrate to one cup of filtered water. Remember, I like mine strong, so if it’s overwhelming to your taste buds, add more water until it’s pleasant to your tastebuds!

She (still) {hearts} nourish organics

Just about a year ago, I reviewed Nourish Organics here on She {hearts} It and I love this company so much that I’m back at it again.  Nourish Organics is an organic skincare company owned and operated by sweet Olivia, who I’ve had the pleasure of knowing for a few years now. Her passion for chemical-free, safe, 100% natural, nourishing skin care is so inspiring, especially to a momma of little ones.

As I’ve said before, I’ve tried just about every product in Nourish Organics‘ line and am hooked. My favorite products are the sweet orange sugar scrub (so moisturizing and smells delicious), the organic peppermint wash (so invigorating) and organic peppermint lip balm (I love the peppermint flavor and the non-waxy, moisturizing formula). I use the organic coconut balm to soothe my sensitive skinned-kids’ eczema and diaper rash.

I was elated when Olivia offered to let me try the new organic grapefruit wash. I am a sucker for anything citrusy, and the refreshing scent of this wash is delightful. Made with renewable, organic oils, the formula is super moisturizing and perfect for spring (who am I kidding, it’s perfect for all year long). This wash tops my list of favorite body products, and it is a daily treat to use it in the shower.

Check out Nourish Organics‘ line of super-moisturizing, organic, amazing-smelling washes, scrubs, balms, and oils.  This skin-loving line is all natural, providing peace of mind in the care of your skin, and your babies’ skin, too.
