She {hearts} Homemade Laundry Detergent

I’ve been making my own laundry detergent for two years, and I thought it was about time I shared my “recipe” with our She {hearts} It readers!  I got this recipe from Drea, who has been making her own detergent for years.

I wasn’t sure how I would like using this detergent, but after over two years of consistent use, I am positive I like it!  It’s pretty economical and it definitely takes up less space than a huge box or jug (which is great, since I don’t exactly have a laundry room).

For one batch, you need:
-1 cup super washing soda (I use Arm & Hammer brand)
-1 cup borax
-1 bar soap, finely grated (takes about 15 minutes)*
(note: I recommend Dr. Bronner’s Bar Soap, scented or unscented, but I have also used Zote or Fels-Naptha in the past)

Mix all ingredients in a big bowl, then put in a large Mason jar!  That’s it!  I use about 1 Tbsp. in each load of laundry, unless it is especially heavy (muddy clothes, etc.), in which case I’ll use 2 Tbsp.  One batch lasts me about 4 months (and I do a lot of laundry).

*I bought a grater at the Dollar Tree so I wouldn’t have to use my cheese grater for this project.

Do you make your own laundry detergent?

I make this same recipe! I use Zote soap and I make it with water so that I have it in liquid or actually gel form. I got the recipe from Stacey :) I’m thinking she might have gotten it from Drea.

I make this too! Except I add baking soda and oxyclean(off brand) to help with extra stains. It works well, lasts a long time and I don’t have to worry about anything added to it that may irritate my daughters skin.
