She {hearts} Lensbaby Composer Lens

IMG_9212copyBack in March this year I went on a photographers retreat. It was an incredible time, but have to admit one of the neatest things I learned was tilt shift lenses. One of the photographers there had one (on rent) and I just had a great time learning to use it. The price tag on this puppy though was close to 2,000 dollars! While I think if you are in a high paying profession you can make investments in this type of gear, if that fits your aesthetic & you feel comfortable with the price tag… I just thought the price was a bit high – and as a professional on a very limited budget, I am always game for more affordable gear that gets the job done well.

Not even a month later after the retreat, I stumbled upon a lens called the Lensbaby Composer – and as soon as I saw it I knew I wanted to try one out. It looked so similar to what I had tried on the retreat, but with a much more reasonable price tag.

I have had so much fun with this lens. It takes practice, as does any new lens. Its great to use when capturing detail, but also adds a unique flare to a portrait. While I don’t think this is the type of lens a photographer who mostly photographs young children or families should use (because it is manual), it is however really great for seniors, weddings and other creative style shooting.

I won’t go into all the details as to HOW this lens works… but I would encourage you to VIEW THIS VIDEO in order to understand the function of this lens better. :) After all, if I tried to explain it, I would probably only confuse you :) – the video is much better at that.

Hello! I have never used this lense, but I love the pictures you have taken here. I would love to use the lense for portraits of my parents mainly, and my husband in his uniform. He is in the military and we are leaving the area this coming february. I would love to have one of my parents and one honoring my husband. I would also experiment with the lense with close up shots of flowers – especially if the lense gives a unique flare like what I see here :)

Oh my…how I would love the get my little hands on this jewel. I think the the first thing I would do upon winning this lens would be to take some photographs of my my beautiful daughter Autumn. She is a stunning young lady who is battling with some teenage self-image issues right now. She has confided in my that she always feels pretty when she looks at the pictures I took of her. So of course, she would be the perfect model for me.

I would then probably take pictures of my other two subjects, my two sons. I am not sure they would be as *excited* about the opportunity but I would bribe them. Kidding. Well…maybe?

I do a lot of work with Military Families from Cherry Point and Camp Lejeune shooting both Pre and Post deployment portraits. Most of my clients are always looking for an artistic image that they can display on their wall while their loved ones are serving our country overseas. I have thought about getting one of these bad boys for a while now, however I am still building other necessary gear to effectively do my job. I would love to have the opportunity to work with this lens and see if it can add some fun touches to these images.

What gorgeous photos, and what an awesome lens! I would love to use the Lensbaby Composer to take photos of my children outdoors — particularly at the park and the pool. Thanks for the contest. I know that this will be an awesome gift for whomever wins it. I have seen some absolutely amazing images created with the lensbaby. If I were to win it, I would use it during my weddings for details shots (such as rings) and flowers. But also added to my ceremony and reception work to create some awesome out of the normal images that I am sure my clients would love.

I’d love to use the Composer for informal portraits of my family. I’ve used the 3G (predecessor to the Control Freak) before and found it very difficult to use off of a tripod and nearly impossible to focus on a moving subject. The “ball and socket” design of the Composer separates the bending from the focusing, so it looks like it would be more user friendly. Give me a chance to find out!
